Ron Anderson & the Zig Zag Set:

Ron paints. And ever since I have known Ron, and it’s been almost twenty years, Ron has painted.

Ron paints and does nothing else, because, contrary to the other painters I know, Ron doesn’t exhibit. He paints and nothing else.

This collection then, is his first excursion before a public. It is the first work that Ron has let leave his studio to enter the vision and into the possession of people he doesn’t know. It is curious to see, how an artist who has already reached fifty years of age, has been able to remain in silence and to perfect his work for such a long time.

I chose Ron because I like his sense of colour.

Does Ron desire, with this excursion, to begin a real career as an artist looking for a market and for clients? I don’t think so, rather I think that a guy like him will follow with curiosity the success of his cups and then will withdraw again to private life, without becoming involved in the turmoil that this “coming out” will cause to explode in his life. Because Ron is calm, detached, almost disinterested socially: one of those who don’t care much about anything and who live for their work, which in his turn he does only for himself.

Certainly, a life like this has two sides, like a medallion: on one side you can’t compare to a wide and often prepared public and due to this lack of exchange you could remain behind. On the other side, you remain pure, because only the rigorous ascetic detachment towards the market will allow you to run your own exclusive course without becoming attracted to the things that the market would induce you to do.


You need a lot of courage to live thus, in today’s world. And not only courage: you need psychic strength, intellectual power, a strong will to keep your self-respect alive in a world that is divided by “wannabe winners” and “dammit am I losers”. You need culture and detachment, and again detachment, from everything that by the simple fact of being contemporary believes itself to be culture. From everything that by being actual believes itself to be of quality. From everything that by being imposed believes itself to be vital.

A detachment that, ever fewer of those among us, know how to have.
